Welcome to: Ped Ex --the special e-news from the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association.
Our purpose is to connect you with the Research and Resources to better serve the families in your communities.
Philosophy:
We won't always know whose lives we've touched and made better for our having cared, because actions can sometimes have unforeseen ramifications. What's important is that you do care and you do act.
- Charlotte LunsfordThis quote seems most fitting this week as the profession hears about one of its most dedicated leaders, Dr. Guy Riekeman leaving Palmer. For those who decide to speak out where it will have some impact, you may contact the Palmer Board of Directors here: http://www.icpa4kids.com/palmer_university.htm
Science:
Informed choice. It's in the literature, but not yet in the medical mind set or practices. An eye opening report in BMJ supports the patient's right to be informed and choose. http://bmj.bmjjournals.com/cgi/content/full/328/7436/0-f?etoc This is a great report to let your patients know they do have a choice and to point out to any of their practitioners who dispute their right.!
Baby Walkers. This study provides additional evidence that baby walkers are associated with delay in achieving normal locomotor milestones. Baby walkers are known to increase the risk of injuries in infancy.5 The use of baby walkers should be discouraged. http://bmj.bmjjournals.com/cgi/content/full/324/7352/1494Flu Shot Frenzy: If we thought the frenzy for flu shots were epidemic this year, expect worse next year as flu shots are now being recommended for infants. http://bmj.bmjjournals.com/cgi/content/full/324/7336/502/b
Technology in Birth: With the year on year increase in rates of operative delivery it is important to evaluate the impact of obstetric interventions on future reproductive outcome and subsequent mode of delivery.
An increasing proportion of women who want a spontaneous vaginal delivery have an operative delivery—instrumental vaginal delivery or caesarean section—in the second stage of labour. Few studies have examined the consequences of such operative delivery for future pregnanciesOperative deliveries are known to have long term consequences for fertility. C-sections decrease a woman's confidence in having a future vaginal delivery even more so than a vaginal instrumental delivery. Fear of childbirth is often reported, after all types of operative delivery, as a reason for avoiding future pregnancies. http://bmj.bmjjournals.com/cgi/content/full/328/7435/311
