Philosophy, Science, Art

Welcome to: Ped Ex --the special e-news from the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association.

Our purpose is to connect you with the Research and Resources to better serve the families in your communities.

Philosophy:

"I know of no safe depository of the ultimate powers of the society but the people themselves, and if we think them not enlightened enough to exercise control with a wholesome discretion, the remedy is not to take it from them, but to inform their discretion by education."
-Thomas Jefferson.

Science:

Monkey virus may hold clue for development of common blood cancer

There has been a debate as to whether SV40, which contaminated some batches of polio vaccine in the 1950s and 60s, could cause human cancer, especially after the virus was discovered in human tumors. There is no question that SV40 is a powerful cancer virus in some animals, says Samaniego. In a hamster, for example, the virus causes both lymphomas and mesotheolioma lung cancers, as well as tumors in the brain and bones.

Antidepressant use skyrocketing in children and Lacet criticizes drug companies for with holding the evidence.

A study by the National Collaborating Centre for Mental Health in London looked at previous research on selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) for children. It found that in published studies, all SSRIs appeared to have a favourable ratio of risk to benefit. But, after also looking at unpublished trials, it was found that, with the exception of fluoxetine, the risks exceeded the benefits

The Lancet accused pharmaceutical companies of "confusion, manipulation and institutional failure".

There is growing evidence to suggest that drug companies are withholding trials that are unfavourable. This is worrying because we rely almost solely on published data." He and the other researchers are asking that laws be changed to require that drugmakers publish all data related to their drugs.

"The idea of a drug's use being based on the selective reporting of favourable research should be unimaginable . . . however, [the new study] suggests this is what has been happening for research into the use of antidepressants in childhood. The results illustrate an abuse of the trust patients place in their physicians."

The Lancet said this behaviour, motivated by greed, will lead the public to doubt the results of medical research on a broad scale, and undermine future research. "People around the world understand the desire to achieve success and to work in a profitable environment. They will not, however, tolerate the notion that in biomedical research this could be at the expense of their children's lives."

In a separate editorial, the Lancet also criticized the Food and Drug Administration for failing to "act appropriately on information . . . that these drugs were both ineffective and harmful in children."
"The story of research into selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor [SSRI] use in childhood depression is one of confusion, manipulation, and institutional failure," The Lancet's editors wrote. "In a global medical culture where evidence-based practice is seen as the gold standard for care, these failings are a disaster."

"In teenagers, antidepressant use is really exploding," Delate tells WebMD. "Antidepressant use among the very young is increasing even more rapidly. Their rate of use is much lower than among older children -- but we're seeing a doubling of population using it. General practitioners are writing most of the antidepressant prescriptions. Pediatricians are up there, too."

TV Toddler Time Linked to Attention Problems

Tempting as it might be to do so, using the television to "baby-sit" 1- to 3-year-olds increases the possibility that the baby will have attention problems in school, according to results of a new study of more than 2,500 children
