ICPA/ New Beginnings Annual Weekend Celebration:

For the past 3 years, the ICPA has collaborated with New Beginnings offering Philosophy, Science and Art classes relevant to Family Care. This year we will be joining together on the fall weekend: Sept 28 - Oct 1 in Eatontown, NJ.

This year we will be offering our diplomates a special reunion luncheon. To date, there are two graduating classes of 27 diplomates. Come join us to congratulate those doctors who have put in the extra commitment to care for children. http://www.newbeginningschiro.com/

Exciting Research Update:

Kudos to ICPA members and their enthusiasm for children and chiropractic. We recently put out an e-mail survey to 1550 members and within 2 hours had 225 responses! Within the 48 hour allotted time period to respond, 800 invited participants had opened the e-mail and once dupes were eliminated, a whopping 579 members had participated in the survey.

This type of response rate is "out of the box" and shows the level of commitment and dedication you have for our mission. You are awesome!

If you think it can't get better--it does--in response to our question: "what are the 5 primary reasons why parents bring kids to your office" the number one answer was: WELLNESS. Apparently, our members are getting the chiropractic family wellness message out to parents and families are on board with our mission as well.

Pay Forward:

You will be receiving a call to action letter. Please respond as soon as possible and we will go to the next level in our national advertising for chiropractic family wellness.

Neonatal vitamin K administration and childhood cancer in the north of England: retrospective case-control study.

Administration of intramuscular vitamin K versus no exposure to vitamin K.
Conclusions: It is not possible, on the basis of currently published evidence, to refute the suggestion that neonatal intramuscular vitamin K administration increases the risk of early childhood leukaemia. Any association may have been masked in earlier studies that did not use controls matched for time and locality by other unidentified factors affecting the spatiotemporal variations in incidence of leukaemia. http://bmj.bmjjournals.com/cgi/content/full/316/7126/189

The ICPA addressed this issue several years ago in our newsletter. Reread the article here: http://www.icpa4kids.org/research/articles/birth/Vitamin_K_at_Birth.htm

Relation of infant diet to childhood health: seven year follow up of cohort of children in Dundee infant feeding study

Conclusions: The probability of respiratory illness occurring at any time during childhood is significantly reduced if the child is fed exclusively breast milk for 15 weeks and no solid foods are introduced during this time. Breast feeding and the late introduction of solids may have a beneficial effect on childhood health and subsequent adult disease. http://bmj.bmjjournals.com/cgi/content/full/316/7124/21

Finally...

The American Academy of Pediatrics recently stated, "The breast fed infant is the reference or normative model against which all alternative feeding methods must be measured." Therefore our vocabulary needs to change, and we should be saying that formula fed babies have more diseases and poorer psychological development than normal babies, rather than that breast fed babies have less disease and higher intelligence. This longstanding view is, however, under threat from the fact that HIV may be transmitted from mother to child through breast milk.
