Insurance companies are still denying care for children.
I just received another letter forwarded to me from an insurance company
in Massachusetts that is denying care for children. We just saw this happen with
United Healthcare (UHC). As some chiropractic groups wrote letters to UHC
to dispute it, the majority of the profession sat back and said, "It's
taken care of, I don't have to do anything." We are fooling ourselves
to think that a mere letter and response from UHC saying they will
look into it and rescind their denial (for now) is enough for
us to settle back and relax. It reminds me of asking the fox to guard
the hen house.
This has not gone away—nor will it. More and more insurance companies are
denying care for children. They insist they have done literature searches
and there is none to substantiate care. They are holding us to standards
beyond what the medical profession is held to. Unfair? Yes! Will it
just go away? No. Can we fight the conglomerate with political action?
Dream on. Do you think our funding can come close to theirs?
So here is our choice:
we can treat the symptom by simply disputing their denials, writing
more letters of appeal and hoping for the best, or we can produce research—until
we produce the research to substantiate care, we are not getting
to the cause. This
is a basic principle of chiropractic...getting to the cause—right?
We need the research! Talk is cheap. Right now, we need to walk the
walk.
If you are not yet participating in the ICPA/PBRN Research Project for
Children's Safety and Effectiveness I can only ask: WHY NOT? I cannot
accept any excuse that will justify passivity when our rights to care for
children is being threatened.
I can liken this
to our frustration when patients do not follow through with our recommendations,
when they do not take the initiative to do their part. The ICPA has
put together the machine to handle the data collection, its compilation
and writing it up for publication. What we need is the data! That means
your participation—not the D.C. down the street, or the one in the in the
next state—but YOU!
Right now —this minute—you need to sign
up for our children's PBRN and collect data. We have another 7 short
weeks to collect the data and we need ALL of US to participate. Once
this project is completed we have others to address all of the unwarranted
reasons why insurance companies are denying care—your care!

Here is what one of our participants
says about the ICPA/PBRN :
"Nobody benefits from chiropractic more than
kids, but we need the parents to know this, not just the chiropractors. It's
great to see an organization step up and gather the research to show
chiropractic's safety and its benefits for kids. All wellness chiropractors
should be a part of this."
