This month's News to Use is reflective of a great shift we are experiencing in government, science, health practices and public awareness and demand. Read through and celebrate the role you have as a chiropractor in this shift.
Just recently an article on Pediatric CAM was published in the Journal Pediatrics. It showed that chiropractic care for children was the second most used CAM therapy. There were some considerations about the paper that needed to be addressed. On behalf of chiropractic, Dr. Matt Mc Coy wrote a letter to the editor of pediatrics, to clarify some misstated points of the article.
Read the letter to the editor here: www.pediatrics.aappublications.org
From the article: "The latest scientific studies show that our bodies have a remarkable capacity to begin healing, and much more quickly than we had once realized, if we address the lifestyle factors that often cause these chronic diseases. These studies show that integrative medicine can make a powerful difference in our health and well-being, how quickly these changes may occur, and how dynamic these mechanisms can be."

A must read article by Deepok Chopra refuting a Wall Street Journal bash on integrative medicine.
From the article:"The blind allegiance to "evidence-based medicine" overlooks how readily this form of research can be manipulated. It was first developed to isolate patentable agents for drug formulations. In scientific arenas outside of mainstream medicine, this "statistics-based medicine" is regarded as dubious science at best. Narrowly confining itself to costly, selectively published, industry-sponsored clinical trials, to promote pharmaceutical products, "evidence based medicine" is the marketing "icon" used by the current system to squelch lower cost competitors. "

"Managers with incompatible, discordant and irrelevant scientific and clinical expertise in devices...have ignored serious safety and effectiveness concerns of FDA experts," the letter said. "Managers have ordered, intimidated and coerced FDA experts to modify scientific evaluations, conclusions and recommendations in violation of the laws, rules and regulations, and to accept clinical and technical data that is not scientifically valid."

Robert Sears, MD author and leader to some in CAM care recently wrote a book providing an alternate vaccine schedule. First the book was touted as a great contribution to parents undecided about vaccines and even supportive for those who decided not to vaccinate. Apparently the AMA criticized him, and in this report on WebMD, Sears clarifies his real position on vaccines. Read carefully... "I almost see myself as an ally of the AAP in that I'm finding ways to encourage parents who otherwise would not vaccinate [their children] to go ahead and vaccinate," Sears says. "I believe that my options will actually increase the vaccination rate."

Clinical trials have produced conflicting results on the efficacy of unconjugated pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine in adults, Dr. Anke Huss from University of Bern and colleagues explain in the January 6 issue of the Canadian Medical Association Journal. Meta-analyses have also produced varied results depending on the trials included.

Only if we become involved...
The two people who are to lead the new White House Office of Health Reform - Tom Daschle and Jeanne Lambrew - coauthored a book earlier this year titled "Critical: What We Can Do About the Health Care Crises." As government officials, they will have much to do with its reform in the coming months and years. Here are a few of their thoughts on health care:
- "There are many factors driving up health care costs. One problem is that 'supply side' forces exist in our health-care system. Physicians both diagnose and treat illness - in economic terms, they create and satisfy demand. . . . Conditions such as 'restless leg syndrome' weren't conditions until drugs were developed to treat them."
- "We seem to assume that high-tech medicine can only be better than low-tech medicine, that more medical care is better, that newer is better, and that more aggressive is better. Yet sometimes it isn't so." [Quoting from Deyo & Patrick, Hope or Hype: The Obsession with Medical Advances and the High Cost of False Promises, New York AMACOM, 2005]
- "[S]special interests are especially numerous and influential in the health-care system. Health care comprises one-sixth of our economy, and the savings we seek will come out of executive's salaries and companies' profits. In terms of political clout, the health-care industry is second to none."
- "Between 1998 and 2006, pharmaceutical companies and other manufacturers of health-care products spent over a billion dollars on lobbying, more than anybody else and twice as much as the oil and gas industries. Insurance companies, including health insurers, ranked second."
- "Since cutting costs is tantamount to cutting profits for many of these special interests, it is reasonable to expect them to engage in all-out war to defeat reform."
These are strong points reveals their understanding of some root corruption. Will they go beyond the faulty existing structure, dismantle it and build from a new base? Since the book does not mention holistic health care and its part in the solution, we can help to inform them.
Write to them and send it to:

Tell them that natural health must be a fundamental base in the reform of health care.
